What happens to your business if you disappear for a month?
Does it die? Does it limp? Or does it quietly flourish?
If the honest answer makes you uncomfortable, good. That discomfort is the starting point for growth.
After decades of building, coaching, and exiting MSPs, Aaron Smith and us have seen three specific ceilings that hold owners back.
Here is how to break through them:
1. The Leadership Ceiling
You’re the best tech and the best salesperson. That’s why you’re the bottleneck. If every decision flows through you, the business can only grow as fast as you can personally work.
The Fix: Define accountability. Not in your head, but on paper. One person owns one function. When expectations are clear, people stop asking you for permission. Your phone gets quieter. That isn't a loss of power; it’s a gain of freedom.
2. The Revenue Ceiling
Referrals eventually run dry. But before you hire a BDM or chase "new logos," look in your own backyard.
The Fix: We once found $3.5M in untapped revenue inside our existing client base just by asking better questions.
"What are you trying to achieve this year?"
"What’s keeping you up at night?"
Don't build a sales team until you’ve built a sales engine.
3. The Identity Ceiling
This is the hardest one. For a business to grow, it eventually has to be bigger than you.
The Fix: If the idea of the business running without you feels like "irrelevance" rather than "freedom," your ego is the ceiling. I once called my own mobile from the office just to see if it still worked because the calls had stopped.
I had made myself redundant. That was the goal. That’s what made the business sellable.
The Breakthrough Equation:
Structure + Sales Engine + Scaling Beyond Yourself.
None of these work in isolation. They come down together through honest conversation and better systems.
Which of these ceilings are you hitting right now?
