The Post-Holiday Peace: Why Returning to Work Can Actually Be Seamless
Reflecting on my return to work after a month long vacation, I’ve noticed something that would have felt like a miracle a few years ago. Walking back into the office felt completely seamless. Reflecting on my return to work after a month long vacation, I’ve noticed something that would have felt like a miracle a few years ago. Walking back into the office felt completely seamless. There was no chaos, no backlog, and absolutely no dread. It was a quiet, calm transition that allowed me to pick up exactly where I left off, without the crushing weight of a thousand "urgent" emails or a team in crisis.
It is a far cry from the years before we discovered EOS. Back then, running my businesses felt like being on 24/7. I had unintentionally created an organisation where I could only ever take one week of leave at a time. Even then, I would usually book Wednesday to Wednesday just so I was never away for a full work week. I was terrified that if I left for a full Monday-to-Friday stretch, the wheels would simply fall off.
If I stepped away for any longer, things started to slip. If I took time off, I paid for it the moment I returned. I would come back to a mess, a sense of total overwhelm, and a mountain of tasks every single time. It was not a holiday; it was just a temporary pause followed by a massive crash. I used to spend the last three days of any trip feeling my stomach knot up, anticipating the explosion of problems I’d have to fix the moment I landed.
The Wake-Up Call
The hardest part of that period was realising it was not just me feeling the pressure. My team felt exactly the same way. As a leader, you often think you’re the only one carrying the weight, but the truth is that a chaotic business environment is felt by everyone from the CEO down to the newest hire.
The day I realised some of my team members were actually avoiding taking leave because they dreaded the workload waiting for them upon their return was a massive wake-up call. They weren't staying because they were "dedicated" in a healthy way; they were staying because they were scared of the aftermath. That was the moment I knew something had to change. It was not just about my own sanity anymore; it was about creating a healthy environment for everyone. I wanted a business where people could go away, switch off their phones, and know that their colleagues had their back.
The Trap of the Indispensable Leader
Many business owners fall into the trap of being the "hub" of the wheel. Every decision, every approval, and every minor fire has to go through them. While it feels good to be needed, it’s actually a massive bottleneck. If you are the only one who knows how to solve a specific problem, you haven't built a business; you’ve built a very demanding job for yourself.
Before EOS, I was that bottleneck. I hadn't empowered my team because I hadn't given them the tools or the clarity to lead in my absence. We were operating on "tribal knowledge" rather than documented systems. When I left, that knowledge left with me. This is why so many Australian business owners struggle to take a proper break. We are a nation of hard workers, but sometimes we work hard on the wrong things, like staying "busy" instead of building "traction."
Building a System That Breathes
We implemented EOS in 2017, and it truly transformed everything. I eventually became an EOS Implementer myself because I had lived the impact firsthand and wanted to help other leaders find that same relief. EOS gave us the structure and clarity we were missing. It helped us harmonise our efforts and created a system that did not fall apart the second a key person took time off.
One of the biggest shifts was defining clear roles and responsibilities through the Accountability Chart. In EOS, we don't just look at job titles; we look at functions. By clearly defining who is responsible for what, we ensured that the business could breathe even when the CEO or the COO was away. We moved away from "who do I ask?" to "what does the process say?"
This clarity allowed us to delegate not just tasks, but authority. When my team knows exactly what their "number" is and what their rocks are for the quarter, they don't need me hovering over them. They have the autonomy to keep the ship moving forward. Because of that shift, we could all finally take real holidays. The kind where you actually switch off, reset, and return refreshed instead of exhausted.
The Power of the Scorecard and Level 10 Meetings
Another reason my return was so seamless is the EOS Scorecard. While I was away, I didn't need to check in or ask for updates. I knew that the weekly Level 10 Meetings were happening. I knew that if a metric went off track, the team would identify, discuss, and solve it (IDS) without needing my input.
The beauty of a well-run EOS business is that it creates a "pulse." This weekly rhythm ensures that issues are caught early. When I walked back in, I didn't find a mountain of hidden problems because the team had been solving them in real-time. The transparency that EOS brings to an organisation is what creates the "calm" that every business owner craves. You no longer have to wonder if things are getting done; the data tells you they are.
Vision, Traction, and Healthy
At its core, EOS is about achieving three things: Vision, Traction, and Healthy.
Vision means getting everyone in your organisation on the same page with where you’re going and how you’re going to get there. Traction means bringing discipline and accountability to the team so that they can execute that vision every single day. Healthy means helping your leaders become a cohesive, functional, and fun team to work with.
When you have all three, a month-long vacation isn't a threat to the business; it’s a testament to its strength. It shows that the Vision is clear enough to be followed without constant redirection, the Traction is strong enough to maintain momentum, and the team is Healthy enough to support one another.
More Than Just a Framework
A smooth return to work is just another reminder of how powerful these tools can be when you truly commit to them. Whether you are the Visionary driving the big ideas or the Integrator keeping the engine running, you deserve a business that supports your life rather than consuming it.
EOS is not just a business framework. It is freedom. It is the ability to walk 7km in -2 degrees Celsius along the Thames River, enjoy a lunch at a classic English pub, and know that everything back home is handled. Even if my son had a slightly different interpretation of what a "lovely walk" looks like in that freezing weather—and let’s be honest, -2 degrees is a bit of a shock to the system for us Aussies—I was able to be fully present with him. I wasn't checking my emails under the table at the pub. I wasn't taking "quick" calls while looking at the river. I was just there.
That is the real "ROI" of EOS. It’s not just about the bottom line or the growth percentages—though those certainly improve. It’s about the quality of life for you and your team. It’s about the peace of mind that comes from knowing your business is a well-oiled machine that can thrive with or without you in the room.

I am always happy to chat about how EOS made this possible for us and how it can do the same for your organisation. There’s no pressure, just a friendly conversation about how you can start taking back your time and building a business that truly serves you.
